Brendan McEvoy, Editorial Contributing/Staff Writer Brendan McEvoy was hired by Travel Golf Media in November of 2003 after five years with Times Community Newspapers, a Reston, Va.-based chain of 18 weekly newspapers covering the suburbs of Washington, D.C.
McEvoy wedged his foot in the door with The Times as the real estate editor before working his way into the sports department. In 2002 he was promoted to sports editor of the flagship paper, The Loudoun Times-Mirror.
He won six Virginia Press Association Awards, including first places for sports writing portfolio and sports news writing. In 2002, his column questioning the partnership of the American Softball Association – the governing body of the U.S. Olympic women’s softball team — and Hooters Restaraunts won a national award in the Suburban Newspapers of America contest.
In April 2003, the 15-handicapper wrote his first freelance golf destination review for New York Golf magazine and was hooked. Travel Golf used two of McEvoy’s freelance stories last summer, leading to his current position with the company.
A graduate of George Mason University, McEvoy currently resides in Ashburn, Va., but he’ll move to Scottsdale, Ariz. in January 2004 to supervise Travel Golf’s editorial interests in the West.
