A former golf standout at Concord High School in Wilmington, DE, Jay Mankus set several school records including 2 top 15 finishes in the Delaware HS state tournament. He went on to graduate from the University of Delaware with a BS in Recreation & Parks Administration. Before graduating, Jay spent 4 months interning at a golf club in the east suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio specializing in golf course maintenance & design.
His love for writing began while serving as a youth director in the mid-west. This passion led to a 3 year stint as publisher & editor of Soul Improvements. As his golf game improved, he spent the spring of '95 playing on the Tommy Armour Tour in Florida and later that year attempted to qualify for the Canadian PGA Tour. While he was not successful, this experience led to an assistant pro position in Chicago. One year later, he became the Manager of the Michael Jordan Golf Shop in Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. It wasn't until Jay moved back to the east coast, after helping open the Back Creek Golf Club, that he began writing for TGM, in September of 1999.
