TravelGolf.com: Golfers React to Tragic Events
By Douglas Carey, Contributor
On behalf of the entire staff at TravelGolf.com, we express our
deepest sympathy to the families and friends of those who have suffered
a loss of life or injury as a result of last week's horrendous tragedy.
TravelGolf.com has launched a network-wide ad campaign called "Get
off the greens and give to the Red Cross," and we urge our readers
to call 1-800-HELP-NOW (1-800-435-7669) to make financial contributions
to the Red Cross. "We ask our readers to cut back a little on golf
and recognize what is important right now," said TravelGolf.com
general manager Robert Lewis.
TravelGolf.com: Commentaries from Our Writers
For TravelGolf.com senior writer Joe Bruno, the terrorist attack
hit home Tuesday morning when he couldn't contact his sister-in-law,
who was at a meeting in lower Manhattan, just a few blocks from
the World Trade Center. Thankfully, she called Tuesday afternoon
to let everyone know she was okay. Read his first
person account here.
On our message boards at
GolfBoards.com, discussion this week quickly changed from vacation
destinations to the horrific attacks. Many of our staff writers have
offered their comments on the events, including Guy E. Torrey IV,
whose editorial is titled,
"On A Nation Shocked From Slumber."
MyrtleBeachGolf.com: Golfers React
The catastrophic events that shook the nation Tuesday were enough
to slow down golfers at most Grand
Strand area golf courses, but not enough to stop play completely
according to local golf professionals. As contributing writer Shane Sharp
reports, "Most courses reported that staff members had not requested
to leave the premises, but a number of course officials did say
that play essentially came to a screeching halt once the word got
out."
For a general report on how the
golf industry is reacting to the tragedy, check out Sharp's
report from Charlotte, where he found most people focused only on
the attack. "I don't care about any economic stress that this causes.
I don't care if I have to give back all the money from my packages
this weekend or this month," said Marty Ekster, Director of Golf
Vacations of the Carolinas.
GolfFlorida.com: Tragedy Affects Disney World
Disney World and Orlando's other famous
theme parks shut down Tuesday in the wake of the largest attacks
on American soil since Pearl Harbor. However, golf around the sunshine
state's most recognizable tourist attraction went on in a business-as-usual
fashion at courses throughout the greater metro area. Al Gaspari,
President of World of Golf Tours, said that the phones at World
of Golf Tours were quiet Tuesday, but that he did not know what
the long term impact on golf based travel to Orlando would be.
GolfArizona.com: Perspective from the West Coast
With temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, and a typical early
week docket at most Phoenix
area golf courses, fairways in the Phoenix metro area remained
fairly empty last Tuesday. "Everybody showed up, but not everybody's
mind was on their golf game," said Whirlwind Golf Club head professional
Steve Schyberg. "Everybody that showed up this morning already knew
what happened. Every golfer that walks off the course this afternoon
comes in a watches television."

In case you missed last week's report, be sure to catch senior writer
David R. Holland's visit to the best new golf course to open this
century in Colorado,
The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa, located in spacious Grand Junction.
Holland says this Jim Engh design is "a pilgrimage through sandstone
aboard a sliver of verdant carpet," and that's just the start. The
course features a calming panorama at 4,600 feet in elevation, looking
south to the pinks, reds and browns of the 800-foot cliffs of The
Colorado National Monument, north to the gray-purple Bookcliffs
and east to Mount Garfield and the Grand Mesa, the world's highest
flat-topped mountain.
Coming this Fall: ScotlandGolf.com Spectactular

He will stay at The Old Course Hotel at St. Andrews, which overlooks

or just want to sound off about the latest from the PGA Tour, be
sure to visit the GolfBoards.com
website, a series of message boards where visitors can write about
everything from the Myrtle Beach golf scene to new equipment. There's
also a free classifieds section where golfers can advertise that
old set of clubs they've been meaning to sell for years. And if
you haven't checked it out already, be sure to visit the new TravelGolf.com
Pro Shop, a joint venture with The Golf Warehouse. With all
of this at TravelGolf.com, there's no need to go anywhere else on
the Web.
Until next week....God bless America.
