TravelGolf.com: Harbour Town Rocks Hilton Head Island
By Douglas Carey, Contributor
Regular readers know senior writer Jeffrey A. Rendall as our authority on Virginia golf at OldDominionGolf.com, but
this week he branches out with a trip to Hilton Head and the
Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the PGA Tour's WorldCom Classic.
Rendall says to come prepared for a challenge: "It's a supreme test of golf that puts further distance between
us average golfers and the pros." The challenge won't come cheap, but if you'd like to play a course like
few others, Harbour Town is a great place to start.
GolfCalifornia.com: Striking Views of the Sierras
Resting at 1,500 feet elevation, the
Greenhorn Creek meanders through a hilly terrain with plenty of mature oaks for character.
Although not exceedingly long, it can play much tougher. "Greenhorn is no simple track to navigate,"
says staff writer Jeffrey Weidel. "In fact, it requires quite a bit of shotmaking.
Practically every club in the bag is needed." Located in the picturesque Northern California town of Angels Camp,
Greenhorn Creek was recently redesigned by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and the results are impressive. And if you're planning
a visit, be sure to check out Weidel's comments on the nearby lodging and dining options.
OldDominionGolf.com: Laying A Solid Foundation
The Golf Club at Brickshire opened just September 22nd, and senior writer Jeffrey A. Rendall
didn't waste a minute to file his review. There are several areas still under construction, but overall Rendall gives
high marks to this impressive golf facility. Located about 25 minutes west of Williamsburg,
Brickshire features the work of designer Tom Clark with consultation by Virginia's finest, Curtis Strange.
"Clark and Strange are known for crafting courses with a tremendous dose of golf hole diversity as well as challenge,
but Brickshire's varied property allowed them to take their philosophies to the fullest," Rendall writes.
MyrtleBeachGolf.com: A Must-Know Guide to Fall Golf
Golfers will find that Myrtle Beach's fairways, roadways, and restaurants are slightly
less crowded in the fall than during the ever popular peak spring season. With that in mind,
senior writer Shane Sharp has compiled a brief
guide to fall golf in Myrtle Beach, complete with things to look for when you hit the links.
Also at MyrtleBeachGolf.com this week, be sure to catch Sharp's review of the
Blarney Stones Pub and Cigar Bar, the Grand Strand's first upscale Irish Pub, cigar smoking room, and Martini
bar. "The Stone's unique food offerings are cementing its
reputation as one of Myrtle Beach's best eateries," Sharp writes.
GolfCarolina.com: Charlotte's Top Ten Golfing Values
Senior writer Shane Sharp tees off our newest series with a look at Charlotte's Top Ten Golfing Values,
beginning with a review of the
Stonebridge Golf Club, our top pick in the Queen City. "The traditional layout just down the road from the
historic village of Waxhaw supplanted Olde Sycamore as the best course a reasonable amount of money can
buy in the Charlotte area," Sharp writes. In addition to Stonebridge's majestic greens,
players also rave about the front and back nines, which are chalked full of some of the most memorable daily fee
holes in Charlotte.

From the Rough: Spotlight on the Military
With many reservists being called to duty, we join the country in turning our attention
to the U.S. military. In this week's feature story, senior writer David R. Holland takes a special
look at
America's Military Golf Courses as part of his continuing On The Road series.
A retired Air Force Lt. Colonel who served during the Vietnam era and Desert Storm,
Holland traveled all over the world during his career. Here he highlights the miliary's best
courses, including the Air Force Academy's Eisenhower Blue Course in Colorado Springs.
Editorial Spotlight: The Links Group Expands
Representing some of the most unpopular and poorly
maintained courses in Myrtle Beach,
The Links Group is expanding its management of courses while under bankruptcy protection.
But is their second “lease” on life bad news for Grand Strand golf at large?
With the Golf Capital of the World fighting through one of its biggest slumps in recent
history, we believe it could be time for the Myrtle Beach golf community to question the expansion of a
company that seems to have caused the region nothing but grief.
As always, if you disagree with our reviewers on a certain course
or just want to sound off about the latest from the PGA Tour, be
sure to visit the GolfBoards.com
website, a series of message boards where visitors can write about
everything from the Myrtle Beach golf scene to new equipment. There's
also a free classifieds section where golfers can advertise that
old set of clubs they've been meaning to sell for years. And if
you haven't checked it out already, be sure to visit the new TravelGolf.com
Pro Shop, a joint venture with The Golf Warehouse. With all
of this at TravelGolf.com, there's no need to go anywhere else on
the Web.
Until next week....God bless America.
