THIS WEEK:

TravelGolf.com: Southern California Dreamin' at
Lost Canyons, plus a fresh look at LasVegasGolf.com

By Douglas Carey,
Contributor

When senior writer Jeffrey A. Rendall headed to California recently for a family vacation, he made sure to bring his clubs. Fortunately for us, he made plenty of time for golf, starting with a quick 36-hole tour of the Lost Canyons Golf Club Simi Valley just outside of Los Angeles. Rendall says the Sky Course and its sister, the Shadow Course, are two PGA tournament caliber golf courses. "They’re severe tests from the back tees, and would make for spectacular television coverage if given the opportunity," he writes. Even though you're deep in the middle of Southern California, you'll be amazed at the tranquility of Lost Canyons. "If the temperature was about 40 degrees cooler and there were some pine trees, you’d be in Montana," Rendall says.

From hole designs on cocktail napkins to golf tournaments that feature tee shots from toilet bowls, things are done differently at the Turquoise Valley Golf Course in the border town of Naco. As senior editor Shane Sharp discovers, Arizona’s oldest continuously operated golf course features a rich history. And all of this is wrapped up and delivered at a high desert altitude of over 4,600 feet that keeps temperatures at Turquoise Valley comfortable year round.

HawaiiGolfGuide.com: The Jewel of the Wailea

Soon after arriving in Maui on business, staff writer Diana Rowe Martinez made her way over to the Wailea Golf Club, one of the largest and most acclaimed golf facilities in Hawaii. (Now, that's the way to start a business trip.) Located 17 miles from the airport, the award-winning Wailea Resort includes residential homes and the 54-hole golf course. Our reviewer played the Emerald Course, which is appropriately labeled Wailea’s Tropical Playground.

MyrtleBeachGolf.com: Still One of the Grand Strand's Best

Shane Sharp tees off this week's coverage from Myrtle Beach with a review of True Blue, one of the most memorable, challenging, and aesthetically amazing golf courses the Grand Strand has to offer. As Sharp explains, the Mike Strantz design has undergone several makeovers since opening its doors in 1998. But now they've got it just right for players of all levels. Also this week, check out Sharp's overview of the Murrells Inlet's Highway 707 Corridor, a two-lane section of highway that's home to three championship golf courses, a boatload of local restaurants, and even a few places to hang your visor, kick off your soft spikes, and bed down for the evening.

LasVegasGolf.com: Ready for Prime Time

Our newly redesigned LasVegasGolf.com site launches this week with a look at the scenic Siena Golf Club in Sin City. After reading his review, it's easy to see why Shane Sharp says the course features some of the best conditions west of the Mississippi. After touring this upscale delight, Sharp made time to compile his list of the best par-5 holes in Las Vegas. Among his selections: The par-5, 528-yard 5th hole at Reflection Bay, where the scenery is breathtaking and the golf is championship caliber.

From the 19th Hole: Quick Shots from Virginia and More

At OldDominionGolf.com, Jeffrey A. Rendall heads back to Virginia this week for a review of the Stonewall Golf Club (pictured), which is jumping forward to meet the expectations of a demanding golfing public....At GolfCalifornia.com, Kelly Saul offers a review of the La Quinta Resort and Club, a widely acclaimed Pete Dye layout near Palm Springs... In this week's product spotlight, David R. Holland reviews the Hard Travel Cases from Sweet Spot Golf...Finally, visit GolfArizona.com for a review by Ray Bangs of the historic Legacy Golf Resort, which attracts golfers seeking a truly transcendental experience.

From the Rough: Spotlight on Scotland

In case you missed last week's report, be sure to check out senior writer David R. Holland's review of Scotland's Gleneagles complex (pictured), which has won more than 30 major awards in the travel, leisure and catering industries since 1982. "Some have played the golf courses of Gleneagles and agreed it is the finest moorland golf setting in the world," said Holland, who recently returned from a whirlwind international tour. Be sure to catch his other reports from Scotland, including his review of the beautiful Westin Turnberry Resort and another installment of his popular On the Road series.

As always, if you disagree with our reviewers on a certain course or just want to sound off about the latest from the PGA Tour, be sure to visit the GolfBoards.com website, a series of message boards where visitors can write about everything from the Myrtle Beach golf scene to new equipment. There's also a free classifieds section where golfers can advertise that old set of clubs they've been meaning to sell for years. And if you haven't checked it out already, be sure to visit the TravelGolf.com Pro Shop, a joint venture with The Golf Warehouse. With all of this at TravelGolf.com, there's no need to go anywhere else on the Web.

Until next week...God bless America.
