Euro vs USA August 24, 2006, 5:48 am

by Rob Jones
I don't like the tone of this article. It's written with all the zenaphobic and bigoted flair of the KKK. "
Their" tournemant has been lifted all but twice by americans...That is fine and the reason we call it 'The Open' is that it is open to all, with qualifying rounds before hand a little like your "U.S. Open".
You need to appreciate that your comments are read the world over, get your self a passport and brave the world outside of the states.
You insular monkey!

I do not remember you complaining when the U S A dominated the cup.Maybe in those days you had captains and players who understood what teamwork in golf was about. Maybe less whinging and more attention to detail might help you give us more of a contest.

With the recent drug revelations bet you wished you had not mentioned the "Tour de France". By the way isn't this a related problem in college sports in the US?
What is with a country where its 2 best players cannot even talk to each other?

The 1999 RyderCup?? Tatesless Celebration? I'm a Canadian, Yea you know, one of those polite but gutless wonders who live across your northern border..After reading your worthless gibberish about the Ryder cup, it's format, and how bad it is I want you to think about something... The Ryder Cup, Heck, anything to do with Golf, (and "I" am a golfer) is not "WORLD PEACE". I only wish we Canadians could develop some of the patrotism and enthusiasm shown by Americans when it comes to World Peace AND Golf. We are talking a GAME here people, A GAME....With all the terrible things happening in this pathetic world,I would repectively suggest that the format of the "Ryder Cup" has no importance whatsoever in the overall scheme of things... I watch the Ryder cup matches, and enjoy doing so.I don't however think of them as a religous experience. If your photograph (Brandon), reflects your age then I have great hope for you as age shapes your set of priorities. Lets all stand back and take a deep breath and send out some feelings of compasion to those on "all" sides of all questions, especially to the "Innocents".. Not talking about war waging Americana, let us hope your taste for clothes is kept to yourself in the future.
Everybody is entitiled to a bad taste so be my guest.
What Us citizens especially older ones wear over their big belly is often nauseating so I prefer fashionable yellow any day.

Ryder Cup run for Americans July 27, 2006, 12:29 pm

by Paul Armstrong
Dear Mr. Tucker:
My, my, what a bias you have and strong speculation about the rest of the world. However, I am sure that you do it for reaction from readers, maybe even fellow USians.
Although somewhat critical about Mr. Garcia's attire, he still looks more presentable than his counterparts in the PGA on US courses. However, the point maybe put better that Mr. Woods desire to win might have been greater.
Your speculation about Europeans pointing to dominance in the Ryder Cup is a little extreem as they are a little more reserved and dont throw it in the face of the US as you put it and I doubt if you are in a position to describe tasteless.
My dear boy, the Ryder Cup is meant to be different and although most tournaments are competitive, now we have to determine if we can get along with our playing partners. We sure can slap each other on the butt, but can we work as a team. I think the Europeans have perfected that. It's a totally different style of playing. Remember, the Europeans are made up of the rest of the world and the US team is made up of itself. What's that tell you?
Lastly, I never read or heard anything untoward from the Europeans about a US winner and if you heard the support from the crowds, representing more countries than the US, then I would rethink that thought. It's not all about you and the US, it's about all of us, but you and the media concentrate on people like Mr. Woods and Miss Wie and taint people interested in the sport and put them in a compromising position, but thats the US way. In spite of all that, we still accept you. Thanks for opening the book for others to critique.

With sentiments like yours it is no wonder American's get the label "ugly"
Is it your way or no way!!!

Michelle Wie July 27, 2006, 9:02 am

You may need to take your comments back about Michelle. She is currently in Third place in the middle of the second round. 6 under for the day, 9 under for the Tournament.

Ryder Cup Format seems to have worked wonderfully well for all those years the US were winning. What's this, change the goalposts now because you've not won in a while? Get a grip man. Tiger was brillant at the Open. OK a European hasn;t won for a wee while. They will but please for goodness sake get over it.
Looked forward to some unbiased writing and reporting from you soon.

Ryder cup foresomes July 27, 2006, 6:09 am

by Steve Kent
Brandon is wrong and misguided, foresomes and some extent greensomes is the purest form of teamwork and chemistry - you are playing for your partner -with your partner, as well as against the course and in the Ryder cup for your country. It is nerve wracking to the highest order!!It tests the best for teamwork, committment, planning and of course you need to talk to each other!! It is admittedly falling out of favour - you only get to hit half the shots on a round but there are courses in the UK that still only allows pairs or foresomes on the course, no three or fourballs - Royal West Norfolk and Hunstanton to name two. Keep forsomes alive in the Ryder cup - it tests them to the core!

Ryder Cup July 27, 2006, 5:05 am

by Ian Henderson
I can understand Brandon's comments about the Ryder Cup format because fousomes isn't played much in the US, however in a team matchplay context it is a very succesful format in most parts of the world and you do have to be on top of your game to play well in it. I accept that America has the best individual golfer in the world in Tiger Woods but a team player he isn't and it does seem to me that the American players do have some difficulty putting aside their individual competitive spirit against one another, in the interest of the team. Whatever the solution is for the American team, I don't think it is a case of if we can't win at it then change the format but more a case of finding a way to put out your best team.

Ryder Cup July 27, 2006, 12:39 am

I read with interest your comments re Tiger Woods winning at the Open and the format for the Ryder Cup.
When you start to play golf in Great Britain and Europe, you 'learn' how to play foursome and better ball during your weekly club competitions.
I can only agree with one of your other readers when he says that this is the 'purest form of golf'. Why don't you try it, it really wont hurt and will do wonders for your team building.
In this small country of ours I have witnessed this last few weeks, two men who are at the top of their particular sport and who in my opinion only lifted the games to new heights, both with the way they played and their words on receiving their awards. Thank you Roger Federer and Tiger Woods.

Ryder Cup July 27, 2006, 12:12 am

As usual your columnist is one-eyed. Foursomes (alternate shot) and four ball better ball events are played in just about every country in the world with the exception of the US. Like Stableford events , they are the bread and butter of club events. You continue to make the mistake of thinking that if it doesn't happen in the USA, then it doesn't happen. Wrong.

Ryder Cup July 26, 2006, 9:55 pm

by Peter Norrie
For your information, the correct name for "alternate shot" matchplay is a Foursome.
It is the purest form of golf - unlike 4 ball better-ball,there's no hiding place, it's a character builder!
Most low handicap amateurs in the UK are familiar with this format as it's used regularly in representative matches.
The Americans, despite usually being stronger on paper, just don't have the team spirit of the Europeans.
