Koreans without personalities? June 29, 2006, 5:18 am

by Fred Varcoe
I can only put Wolfrum's comments down to ignorance; he must come from the George W. Bush school of internationalism.
I am married to a Korean and have spent a lot of time in Korea and I have NEVER met a Korean woman who doesn't have a personality - an usually very, very strong personalities.
Se Ri Pak, Grace Park - I think people know their names (and personalities). Why? Because they started winning big. You don't need a personality to win at golf, but you certainly don't need to speak or think in English to get one.
And let's not forget Michelle Wie is Korean.
If the LPGA is going to be an international tour, let's kill the nationality issues some people keep bringing up.

Anika needs to win? June 28, 2006, 6:30 pm

I just couldn't believe it! I felt so outraged that there is still someone like Wolfrum who portends himself as a writer and pretends as though he represents "The fans,LPGA, and media", but writes a piece of junk like this. When you talk about the lack of personality, I can't think anyone but one person; you guessed right, Annika Sorenstam. It's true that some of the post-game interviews Korean LPGA players give is often pityful. But I believe it's the fault of the network not providing a good translator and not the players. However hard they may try, mastering English to the level where you could exude your personality would not be that easy. If the interviewer really wants to make the session interesting to the viewers, she or he should have a regualr good translators ready before the interview.

I am not Korean, but I am so glad there are so many others who are outraged by Wolfrum's piece of trash. I've always enjoyed TravelGolf.com's main articles. I am surprised TravelGolf let this piece of trash by Wolfrum through. This guy sure has serious issues. If he cannot handle his own personal issues, then take him out. Sure, it's always about one man's point of view and sure, comments are always invited. But this piece from Wolfrum does not make the grade for publication. Bring back Brandon, Mark and Heather and let Wolfrum go to pasture!

What is wrong with South Korean golfers winning LPGA ? THey have wonderful personalities than anyone else. Is it fair to say that someone doesn't have personality due to langage problems?

What Century? June 28, 2006, 4:43 pm

by EF
What century does Mr. Wolfrum live in? The Asian fear is over; in fact it's fast becoming the Asian Century, quickly surpassing the American Century.
I'm Asian and an American and I find these comments incredibly racist, sexist, ageist, and narrow-minded. If you need an article about why women's golf is not as vibrant, sponsor-filled, please look at the root cause—the male-dominated, sports-media columnists such as yourself. Women can't simply be good, consistent athletes, they have to look good and be great self-marketers as well and media stars. Maybe when their winning purses match the men's, they can afford to hire the best PR agents.
In the meantime, I think you need to go to Cornell and take some courses in diversity, the marketing can come later.

Golf bias June 28, 2006, 3:21 pm

Wow! Tennis has been virtually transparent these days and the USTA is to blame. LPGA isn't so hot, but the hottest it has ever been(albeit internationally) and an entire ethnicity is to blame. This article is a shame.
Karrie Webb value her privacy, maybe the Korean players value their personal right to be individuals as well.
The author has some real issues. I will definitely be looking elsewhere for my golf news.

what a racialist article is it!! June 28, 2006, 1:57 pm

Please give ma a good reason why in the world this guy should make such statements as "Korean golfers who balance their imposing skills with virtually no personality whatsoever." And "there's no way on earth you'll make Jeong Jang or Mi Hyun Kim a star. Or even get anyone to remember their names."

This guy's article makes me really sick

Is he Annika's boy friend?
It's real SHAME on TravelGolf.com for this kind of racially discriminating article to be printed

"outraged"?? June 28, 2006, 11:22 pm

by David Shoff
I just can't believe that people get so "outraged" over something like this. I think this world would be much better if they got "outraged" over important things. Heck, my wife is 1/2 Korean and I also want American women golfers to play better than they have. It certainly isn't racist, I just want our country represented well. I personally think that if Wie puts her game together she'll dominate the way Tiger dominated the mens tour.

I find these attitude by many Americans quite shameful. Turning TV off whenever US is not winning.
Turning TV off for Wimbledon, Worldcup Football, World Baseball Classic...
I am sure Wolfrum like NFL. Nice and cozy with only truely Americans allowed to play.

I totally agree.. it's shame
