Doug Carey This Week at TravelGolf.com: Sept. 14, 2004

Not surprisingly, we received plenty of responses to last week's commentary by Staff Writer Michael Patrick Shiels on the challenges of youth golf. Many readers had little sympathy for Shiels after learning of the troubles he and his 7-year-old son encountered at two Michigan courses.

"Mr. Shiels is hopelessly out of touch with reality," wrote Bill Taylor of Sutter Creek, Calif. "Keep the dawdling, out-of-their-element young children off the course. Or if you're that concerned, build a course for kids." For the most part, readers agreed with Taylor, with most asking that young golfers stay far away of the actual course. For the sake of golf's future, here's hoping a happy compromise can be reached by all in the coming years.

While our primary focus this week is understandably on the Ryder Cup (see below), we're also closely monitoring the hurricane activity in Florida, where Charley and Frances left their devastating marks over the past few weeks. As always, your comments are welcome on any topic, including this week's action at Oakland Hills. Have a great week.

Anything could happen this year's Ryder Cup, set for Sept. 17-19 at the South Course at Oakland Hills Country Club in metro Detroit. And that's what makes this event such great fun. As Senior Writer Jason Scott reports, the Ryder Cup is really nothing more than a glorified scramble in front of 40,000 fans: Whoever makes the most putts will win, a fact even U.S. captain Hal Sutton admits.

Inside ApproachTraining Aids II: The Full Swing

We've sifted through a stack as deep as the Shinnecock rough of the newest swing aids. Of course, none of these will help you as much as a summer's worth of lessons with your local golf pro. But if you're more the do-it-yourself type, you might find these helpful in shaving a few strokes off your score.
