Golf already looks like Nascar
September 1, 2005, 6:38 am |

And it isn't just my opinion.
On the broadcast of last week's LPGA tourney, one of the commentators suggested that if Annika had one more logo on her shirt, she'd be a Nascar Car.
Commercialism in any sport has reached a point of saturation. Yes, the sponsors bring us the sports, and for that we appreciate them, but the endorsements on hats, shirts, bags, etc. border on the ridiculous. What's next - endorsement tattoos?
Certainly points out why the Masters is such a wonderful place to visit - the course, at least, is devoid of commercialism, if only they could ban the shirt and hat logos, too.

Your column borders on racism!!

Mr. Baldwin,
Your column talking about NASCAR and golf almost borders on what I call a racist slur on southern people who enjoy one of the most popular sports in the U.S. The odd thing is that I do no even enjoy NASCAR and really care anything about it but that doesn't mean that I would call people who do a rednecks! Being from the South, this term really bothers a lot of people including myself. I am a golfer that is proud to be from the South, am I a redneck golfer? I happen to live a few hours from the Talladega Speedway here in Alabama and have heard that you can see people at that race from all different income and educational levels. Your tone in this article seems to be way off mark.

Dear Sir, I am not a redneck; I am a Nascar fan. I am a manager for a major retail company so therefore I have some intelligence. I think that talking about Nascar and golf in the same conversation does not make sense to me.

Michelle, you evidently don't golf, or you might know how many Cup drivers also play golf..and perhaps you might glean some knowledge if you did a google or yahoo search "nascar and golf"..3.5 million hits..hmmmmmmmmm...

Well Shucks Mr Baldwin,
I am a NASCAR fan as well as an Avid golf fan. I don't own a Confederate Flag, nor an RV. I have never even tasted beer, let alone chug it by the bucket.
As far as the toothpaste comment goes I only buy one tube at a time, everyone knows that the fluoride's effectiveness diminishes with time.
Maybe you should remove your neck-tie, release your buttons, remove your undershirt, rub your belly, scratch your head and asked your self this question. If NASCAR is such redneck sport, why is so successful from Homestead Florida to Fontana California ? DOESN'T THAT SCARE YOU ELITIST ?
One for Rednecks, Zero for Elitist

Well Mr. Baldwin, you have missed the mark again..In your doggedly hedonists pursuit to become the next David Faherty. Perhaps you should step down off your high horse and attend a Nextel Cup event and witness for yourself that of which you belittle. I golf, and so do most of my race fan friends. We may be a little on the Red side, you surely have made your stance clear. I will cancel, your drivel isn't worth the time.

nascar v golf

Unfortunately the attitude you took in comparing NASCAR to Golf is reason why so many people still think of golf as an elitist sport. You should really try to understand the fan base of NASCAR before you make such stereotypical remarks. Nascar has always had it raucous fans which may be percieved as Budweiser chugging, rv living, undershirt wearing people. However the percentage of those fans is very miniscule in comparison to the total fan base. Just as every golf tournament you can hear someone yell you da man when a tee shot is struck. I am a regular on the links and occasionally will watch part of a race and I implore you to lump me in with that type of fan. Do yourself and the sport of Golf a favor and stick to building its image instead of tearing down the image of another sport. Because it is obvious that you think it is appropiate to comment on something in which you know nothing about.

Response to Nascar Model Story

In response to your article regarding Tim Finchmem and Nascar. I am confused who you are aiming your shots at. Finchmen or Nascar.
I play golf recreationally but I also watch Nascar. I don't think I'm a Redneck as your article implies and I take offence by that. Nascar is one of the fastest growing sports because any given day, anyone can win.
I hope someone from Nascar gets in touch with you soon and challenge you to sit in the passenger seat for one lap at top speed around Atlanta speedway. I would hazard a guess your underwear would need replacing.
John
