Grooves April 3, 2007, 7:03 am

by Bill
How do you figure the grooves are the problem (if there is an actual problem)? Now a days, these guys (the pros) are out there having huge drives. If they are out driving people by 20, 30, 40 plus yards, how do you figure changing the grooves are going to help? I would usually choose a flop shot out of the rough rather than a five iron off the fairway no matter what kind of grooves I had to play with.
Hey Chuck, get a set (of clubs) and than write an article.

Ahh, another of the "swing-in-a-box" advocates. Just give me something that makes me play great golf so I don't have to worry with anything cumbersome like "practice" or "taking lessons." That's just, you know, too hard and takes all that time. All I want is for golf to be easy so I can play like my buddies who keep taking my money on the course or maybe even the pros on TV. Wouldn't that be great! Then I could REALLY enjoy the game.

Brian:- For those who's ego is so fragile that they feel they have to "buy a good golf game" your point is well taken. However, (trying to think OUTSIDE the box, lets try and remember my comment about the difference between the pro and the "less than", or recreational golfer.."Practice", or "taking lessons"???, I wish most of us could live in that wonderful little world of yours. Most of us are too busy spending our days sitting in gridlock and working for a living to even think we could jam in a practice session or lessons. Getting back to my point. "Recreational" Golf, IS just a game, and the amount of effort one puts into it doesn't have to meet yours or anyone elses standards to be enjoyable and rewarding.. The physical and mental distraction of walking (or riding)around a beautiful golf course, (that should get me into some trouble),should be more than enough value to keep us coming back..Making your game a pissing contest for a few bucks with your buddies, sullies the game when you consider not of you could likely ever make it into one of the pro ams on tour, let alone consistently score well without the help of the eraser on the end of the pencil.. For RECREATIONAL GOLFERS, the game should be the entire experience with the score being the least important aspect.. GOLF FOR FUN and even YOU may find you get more out of it than frustration and a bad temper you can drag home and lay on anyone around you, or LIE yourself into a fraudulent persona of a golf hero...

The "Groovy Debate" March 6, 2007, 3:28 pm

by Chuck Collet
Is there anyone with an IQ over 45 who is going to argue the decisions made by the USGA when it comes to the use or abuse of square grooves on golf clubs???? A level playing field under any set of rules can and will make for tighter competition in the pro game and really won't have any impact on the recreational player who we all know cheat, (oops, I mean "fundge")their scores under any conditions on a regular basis.. So here we have it, a rule that will allow the Corey Pavin's of the tour to compete with the muscle bound, 4 hours at the gym a day, under 30, over 6' tall, human mechanical wonders of the tour. Players with true talent will not be diminished by the introduction of a rule that makes them play up to a more uniform standard than they have had to up till now.. The "Tigers" or would be "Tigers" of the golf world have a well of talent so deep that they will simply adjust their game to the new rules and continue to astound us all with their incredible performances.. One more advantage to the new rules will be an end for the need of continuous tweaking of old golf courses, and the need to build 8000 yard plus golf courses so only the top 10 golfers or so on tour can make the fairway off the tee..and the local course put in two extra sets of tees. I'm sure the time will come when technology combined with physical prowess will demand a revamping of the game again, (hopefully after I am on the wrong side of the fairway sod), so lets all enjoy the game, stop the bickering like a bunch of teenage girls over their favourite rock Diva, and go out there and just have some good old fashioned fun, both on the golf course and while watching our golf "idols" on TV..
