Lay it up! May 24, 2007, 8:19 am

by Jerry
As an older wiser golfer, who recently gave up my "stiff" Hogan Magnums for graphite, I have had to learn the art of the lay-up. I have discovered my wedge is darned near always on target from 100-115 yards so that is where I go for. Works wonders!

I think you are addressing a controversy where there is none. Most of the golfers I am familiar with have no chance on covering more than 450-yards in two shots. This effectively solves the problem of going for the green in two. Put trouble in or around the green and you have to lay-up. I am just as likely to strut around crowing about how good I am by pitching close and have a one-putt for the bird.

Maybe it's because I spent my youth playing a lot of tournament golf, but I have always got more pleasure out of shooting good scores--that is the ultimate object of the sport, isn't it? The best players (Woods, Nicklaus, Hogan, Jones) have always known what they could do and what was impossible; I've always enjoyed Hogan's response for why he laid up on one of the back nine par fives at Augusta: "I didn't need a three."
That being said, I will always remember a friend's story of a round in Scotland. On a particular five par, he was well over 200 yards from the green, with gorse, heather, dunes etc. between his ball and the green. As he reached for an iron, his caddy started tapping the head of his three wood. "You think I ought to go for it?" queried my friend. His caddy replied, "When you comin' back again, laddy?" Good advice for life, and, at least on occasion, for golf.

Hacker or not, if it's to your advantage and you think you can get there, fire away. BTW Tim, I'm assuming you're hoping to attract the PC Police correlating weakness with women?

Men aren't the only ones with "grip it and rip it" mentality. Too often the safest route is not the most exciting and I soon regret the "go for it" strategy, but when you actually hit the green then you quickly forget the past stupidity. Good course management is important if you have to work on yor handicap, but if you just want to slug it out, then take the risk, reap the reward or go down in flames.

In regards to Tim's article on wearing pink. Tim obviously is too insecure in his golf game to play for $$ since the color green in my wallet (and Zack's) is of greater significance then the color pink in the parking lot afterwards.
Some play golf competitively and some just want to "look" like a golfer or write like they "know" about being one.
