Chambers Bay February 20, 2008, 7:25 pm

by Hal
Doesn't anyone else think it bizarre that our national championship is being held on a course that even dedicated golfers have never heard of? Chambers Bay is scheduled to host the US Amateur, I believe in 2010, but why on earth should this course, that has no history and tradition, get to hold the US Open until it has hosted a number of other events such as the Walker Cup? This is the sort of thing we have come to expect from the PGA and the European Tour, but I had always thought that the USGA was a cut above these organizations. I also think that while daily fee courses that are generally recognized as among the best in the country such as Pebble Beach and Pinehurst #2 should have their place in the Open rota, the pendulum has swung way too far, with the Open returning to these venues far too quickly.

Steve R. sorta channels "Thurston Howell III" from Gilligan's Island.

I believe this thread was in regard to the Chambers Bay venue, not me personally. If all you have to say is insulting things about someone you don't know, who knows the course, has played the course, and has issues with the PGA selection of the course, then I would suggest you are missing the point of the thread. Your comments here appear to be more appropriate to a chat box or "cat" box -- whichever more closely fits. The issue is "Is Chambers Bay an appropriate revenue for a US Open." It is my opinion that it is not. Your opinion of the course was never really stated. Is that because you don't have one or are you just so busy being snide that you can formulate a reasonable argument?

US Open coureses February 20, 2008, 2:54 pm

I love the idea, but hate ht idea that once the Open goes to the course, the rates go up.. ie Torey Pines, Bethpage,
Pinehurst, Kiawah... maybe the committee could have it in the contract that they do not raise the fees for three years after they play the Open:)
thanks for listening.

Chambers Bay? February 20, 2008, 2:36 pm

by SteveR
I live here about 25 minutes from the course and have played it. I shot an 83 the first and only time out, and I am a 21 handicap! To mention this course in the same breath with Pebble Beach or Pinehurst is poor journalism and deceiving at best. There are a lot better public revenues in Washington State: Washington National or the Club at Newcastle, for two. This is simply a political move by the USGA to get a tournament into a Pacific Northwest/Seattle revenue. It stinks of Robert Trent Jones II favoritism. I hope the PGA sucks asbestos fumes from the once quarry site. I will stay home and watch it on T.V.

an 83 shot by a 21-handicapper?
The odds of that are pretty slim:

Is that a real handicap?
