WE are very fortunate in Erie,PA to have a course designed by A.W.Tillinghast,Erie Golf Club, and that was revamped by Tillinghast Architect, Rich Mandell, three years ago . It was a municipal course that had Country Club fairways and greens. Now after a two year hiatus, Millcreek Township has taken over the course and is starting to undo the damage ignored by the previous City government under a new , not so interested mayor who wanted it as a housing development. The horror!!
We are glad to be back home under new auspices of the Township and we are looking forward to its revitalization and grooming. WE are so fortunate to have this Tillinghast Course as a Municipal Course. All muni's should be supported by the area golfers regardless of course priority...The best professional golfers learned on a municipal course. HURRAH!

Hi,Saving golf courses is very important and playing good old stand-bys is important. Our community,Millcreek township saved Tilligests designed Erie Golf Club.It sat for two years and needs some TLC but it is happening and it was not turned over to a home development which was not needed.

One of my favorite's is Galen Hall Golf Club, Wernersville, Pa. which was originally a 9 hole layout designed by Alexander Findlay, a Scot, in the early 20th century.
A few years later, AW Tillingast redesigned it to its current 18 hole layout. The Moat Hole [the 15th] is purported to be the first 'island' hole built in the US.
A great track anyone can play, and it's green fees are very reasonable.

When we lived in the USA, my muni was Oak Hills, Norwalk CT. Great little course with the usual mix of players. Very good just to roll up for a game and, as far as I know, still there.

My Muni was Lakeside Hills in Olathe, KS. Known to many as 'Olathe National' or the Goat Ranch. The city invited an upscale daily fee course to the city (Prairie Highlands) with some tax abatements, etc. Seeing the popularity of PH, they decided to use the land at Lakeside Hills and build another upscale daily fee course. That bid failed and 'Olathe National' was let go to a pasture. What a waste! Plenty of 'Pool Hall Golf' memories there; including signs requesting you to wear your shirts & shoes in the golf shop & a sign on the 1st hole that read 'No Mulligans' - good thing it didn't say 'No Hooligans' - we couldn't have played there....
