Winter Golf November 26, 2007, 10:03 am

by Chago Williams
Winter is the best time to play golf. Unless there's frost or snow, most courses will let you play all year. You get the course to yourself since only the die-hards are out there, and you can really work on your game. You can treat it like a practice round since pace of play is not much of an issue because of the lack of traffic.

Year round is the way to go here in the Boston area as long as the ground is not snow covered.
It is about an hour or so to many of the courses on Cape Cod and we get a couple of foursomes each Sunday, take the ride, tell lousy, several times heard stories, wait out the usual frost delay, then try to get back by 3:00, which is when we told our wives we would be home. Of course, we never make it. By now they probably add an hour anyway knowing how impossible it is to say no to that one guy who always says "C'mon. Let's just stop for a quick one." Well, maybe it's more than one guy.
To add to our late season misery this year, several of us play at a course that is closing next week, Colonial in Lynnfield, MA, making way for housing, retail and commercial development. So this weekend is it.
One more chance to reach that long par four fourth. One more opportunity to try and stay out of the hazard on fifteen. And one last try for the ever elusive ace on the inviting short third. And, God knows, I'll take a bogey, if necessary, on eighteen. Just don't let me make a double on the very last hole I'll ever play at Colonial.
Hit'em straight.

Hi, I live in Southern Idaho and a bunc of us guys play year round, weather permiting. We put a lot of cloths on, get in our covered car with the heater in it and away we go. We play 5 days a week. We have to play the front nine twice as the shadows from the canyon wall denies us acsses to the back nine. But at least we are out there. Your drives are a lot longer in Dec.-Jan. than they are in June and July and you had better hit it front of the greens and not on them. The ball bounces about 15ft. in the air when it lands. Thank you and have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a Merry Xmas to everyone.

Here at East Aurora CC, just outside of Buffalo, NY, Thanksgiving isn't the end of the season. The season never ends. We play every month of the year.
