Phil August 17, 2005, 1:08 am

by zulu
I enjoy watching Phil play. I also enjoyed his recent success, and I am tired of the doting on Tiger. However; Phil is never going to win 8 majors. He just doesn't possess that drive. Phil is like Freddie and Davis, content to win pots of money and have the adoration of the fans. Nothing wrong with that, but hard to pull for someone who just doesn't care.+

Excuse me. I only pick Phil occasionally. After all the guy has a life, a great family, wonderful kids and a super charity. he spent last Saturday equippping 1000 kids with clothes for school next week. Clearly he is too well rounded to be number 1.
Clearly he is not not focussed. He just steps up when Tiger can't. He brings the audience along for the ride without feeling like a servant.
I read the recent article. I can only assume it was written to piss me off.
Here is a thought: Is it possible that we have leader in a sport that really can produce ans still be a normal guy.
Phil 8 majors - 100 to 1
A NOTE TO THE AUTHOR: Perhaps you forgot the CBS coverage of Nicklaus in 86. Basically they had to eat the mike after suggesting he was done and tired. Just before his back 9.

Phil & Tiger August 16, 2005, 10:06 pm

I like Phil's approach to the game and I really respect his approach to his family. But let's not fool ourselves and think he is going to make this run of majors wins. I think many people are still not convinced that Tiger is poised for a big run. Let's look at this year's majors: 2 wins, 2nd & 4th. This is when he still has one bad round. Imagine how dominant he will be when he gets more comfortable with this current swing. Don't get me wrong, Phil will win more majors, but I don't think it will be 8 more like Nantz said. it's more like 3 more in the next 5 years...maybe.

chris baldwin's column August 16, 2005, 6:05 pm

Wouldn't it be nice today if you could
actually read a column where the author
just made his point? Many of the sportswriters seem to feel they have to be the comedian, come up with all
types of clever stuff to make us feel they
are the consummate writer. I think he should be writing for Johnny Carson.
Let's just have some good editorial.

Phil wins and the Tiger fans go crazy.Of course I am a Phil Fan and I for one think Phil can and will be the best at golf, family, fans and any thing else he chooses to do. He has a personaity that most people wish for, and can never have

I don't know if Phil will win one more or 10 more, but I do know he'll step into each Major with a relaxed attitude that he didn't have before the Masters win or before the validating win this week. I hope Phil does go on to win a bucket full of majors, prove critics wrong & get his name up there with Woods.

Phil's majors August 16, 2005, 8:53 am

Nance is crazy if he really believes Phil will win eight majors. I expect he's capable of three more for a not too shabby total of 5. Tiger can't win them all. Stick with the cut-fade Phil!

I agree with Jim Nantz. Phil is going to win many more majors. He learned how to get over the bad holes and shots at the PGA better then he could in the past. That knowledge carries him to major glory.

Mickelson & Woods August 16, 2005, 8:38 am

I have to say it's a welcome relief to have somebody other than Tiger for the sports reporters to talk about. I have nothing against Tiger I think he is one of the best players of all time. My golfing friends and myself are Tigered to death. I know Tiger is number one and a great player but there are other golfers we would like to hear about. Somebody give us a break.

Phil is probably my favorite golfer, but Phil was like a deer in headlights on Sunday afternoon. Without the postponement he probably finishes -1 or even. Tiger posted his number in brutal conditions. Phil holds on in cool wet conditions. If the tournament finished on Sunday I believe Tiger would have been in a playoff. Does anybody think Tiger would have been beat in a playoff?

HEY---WOODS HAD MANY (TO MANY) LUCKY BREAKS TO GO ON AND WIN. DELAYS HAVE GIVEN HIM CHANCES TO SWING FROM A NIGHTMARE ROUND TO WINING.
WHY NOT PHIL?? WHY NOT ANYONE ELSE??
AT LEAST PHIL DID NOT HAVE THE CROWD COME OUT AND MOVE A HUGH BOLDER SO HE COULD SAVE A PENALTY STROKE.
TOUGH WHEN THE SHOE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT--DON'TCHA THINK???
