Charlotte, NC editorial:
I would like to respond to the giant news but tiny tidbit In Fridays Charlotte Observer sports section regarding a new ruling by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, governing body for golf outside of the United States, to allow qualified women into the British Open.
The home of golf is making this change while in America our most prestigious tournament, the Masters, is held at a place that won’t even admit women as members and exhibits such snobbery as to barely allow television coverage of the event in an effort to “reward the club members and their guests”.
You know - Charlotte is not very far from Augusta. We have proven we can host a world class golf tournament and we have plenty of azaleas. What’s more, we are friendly. Any ideas anyone?

Leave Daly alone

Chris-
You have totally missed the boat on Daly. If he did the Tiger five-minute putt survey or the Phil "phantom" putt every time he lined one up he'd be shooting 82 every round. It's precisely BECAUSE he's nonchalant around the green that he has one of the best short games on tour. He doesn't overthink things like 99% of us hackers do!

I have been working for over 35 years and have almost made the $750,000 that John Daly made by loosing a tourney on Sunday.
John has made and more significantly, lost more money than I will ever dream of.
Chris Baldwin is just another nose picker in the stream of life.

Well Chris Baldwin,
I've no idea who you are, but you're certainly not anyone significant! When did you last miss a short putt, never mind for a major trophy? I think we will all remember John Daly long after you are forgotten, or even known!
He's talented, he's fun to watch and for entertainment he beats all those golfing clones that the US colleges generate...and are so boring to watch!
By the way, I think he's also got more majors than you! And many others!
Stay the way you are John! You and your kind, not many around, are the saviours (that might be spelt wrong!) of TV golf.

And Another Thing!

Comparing John Daly as an athlete or as a drinker to the great Micky Mantle is akin to comparing Chris Baldwin to pretty much ANY writer...crayon or pen. John Daly has a long way to go in both to catch M.M. The Mick is in the Hall of Fame of both Baseball and Booze. God rest his tortured soul.

Big John

Apparently, Chris Balwin had just gotten off the phone with his Mom who was deeply saddened to learn his enormous potential is being wasted by his writing for TravelGolf instead of penning the next great American novel! Man what a pant load Chris. The average American golfer today is playing the game BECAUSE of guys like Big John, Chi Chi, and Lee Trevino . We would much rather watch John Daly slouching around the golf course looking like a big sweaty, cigarette smoking, nonchalant unmade bed than a bunch of buttoned down lucky sperm club members from the country club set. I hate to break it to you folks but golf really isn't a religion. I know, I know...sometimes feels like it but it ain't. John Daly enjoys playing the game HIS way and I can promise you he's not losing a moment of sleep over his bout with the yips.
"No athlete in any sport's squandered as much talent as John Daly?" Good Lord Chris, what are you? Ten years old? Ever head of Chris Washburn, Dwight Gooden, Darrel Strawberry? Daly may not have the career "drive" of a journalistic luminary such as young Mr. Baldwin but then...who does? Daly seems to be happy being John Daly. Since when is that not enough?
Baldwin's condescending shot at Hooters and NASCAR tells you all you need to know about his mindset. Deep in the heart of such golf elitist's, John Daly and the "common man" have no business on a golf course to begin with. The Chris Balwin's would love to relegate John Daly to the back of the Golf bus. As for me....I love to see the that big boy up in front.....DRIVING!

Chris... get a life! The only lout I see here is is a writer that doesn't quite get the true meaning od genius... I suggest you revisit some greatness in your own field (you might start with Hemingway)... and then maybe you'll have the good sense to hand someone in the gallery your quill.

BIG JOHN HAS HIS OWN STYLE. YOU EITHER LOVE IT OR MOVE ON.
THERE WAS A TIME I THOUGHT DALY WOULD NEVER MAKE IT AND THAT THEY GAVE HIM TO MANY CHANCES. I WAS WRONG.
JOHN DALY IS LIKED BY MANY FOR THE KIND OF GAME HE PLAYS AND THE WAY HE HANDLES MYSELF WHEN THINGS GO BAD.
A GUY STANDING CLOSE TO HIM ON THAT PLAY-OFF HOLE COULD TAKE A LESSON FROM BIG JOHN ON THAT ISSUE. JOHN DALY NEVER POUTS. MAY HE BLAST MANY MORE PASS THE POUTER.

respect and pity for John Daly

I'm pretty well to the point to where I am sure I can't dictate how a pro athlete should conduct themselves. I respect John Daly's long game and his usually sweet short game.I admire him for the way he loves golf fans and they in turn adore him. I love the way he seems to have interests other than golf. But, on the other hand , he appears to be the star in a tragic play that could have been written for Mickey Mantle, Mike Tyson, or Len Bias
