Tiger Woods June 25, 2005, 10:48 am

by Joe Duffy
Talk about kiss my ass. How much are you being paid by Woods ???, lets remember the real golf courses where he could not hack it and not the American set up courses like Augusta, remember Muirfield and Carnoustie when the wind was blowing and the rain was horizontal.
Hogan and Nicklaus could do it but not the pussy cat.

tiger woods June 24, 2005, 7:36 am

by m.v.srinivas reddy
a tiger is a tiger and will always be a tiger!
tiger woods is living true to his name.we claim him as an asian tiger!
golf has it's greats. the golden bear, jack nicklaus is celebrated by every golfer. the golden bear shows his true colours even at this age.
tiger will never lose his stripes nor his roar even when he is in his forties/fifties.
oh, how we love this tiger- the way he swings, the way he walks, the way he speaks, the way he just gazes at his prey! he has them all eating out of his hand, by his sheer greatness!
oh, god , why don't you give golf a tiger now and then, just to make golf so much more exciting!
vijay singh too is a great golfer. "singh" in indian language is a lion! vijay is an asian lion!
we have a tiger and a lion competing fiercely for the golf trophies. what a spectackle and what entertainment! i am sure god loves golf, or else why would he give us a tiger and a lion playing golf.

Tiger (great?) June 22, 2005, 1:33 am

I'm not a Tiger fan, (overexposure w/ the networks forcing him down your throat), however; I don't believe anyone is capable of exciting a crowd the way he does. He certainly is capable of comebacks as well, but, it helps that the field peels back to him very often. (re: the open) If Goosen hadn't had brain lag there would have been no charge. As for Phil: He just doesn't seem to take the right game into competition. It's sometimes Dalyesque when watching him commit to a ridiculous shot when all he needs do is get a ball ion play.

Jack and Tiger June 21, 2005, 9:01 pm

by Jaime Alvarez MD
First things first:
Tiger will never, never, never break Jack's majors record. Never. His swing is inconsistent and there are other reasons: His dad's sickness and his wife will ultyimately affect his mental game, which is his strongets asset.
Second, you stupid idiot who knows nothing about golf but like all media wussies are ready to bend over when Tiger walks by, Tiger will never ever ever break Jack's second and third place finishes in the majors, years between first and last major win, oldest to win a masters, oldest to place in the top ten in a major, number of victories, World cup wins, Rider cup wins or even number of children. If Jack, at his prime, with his swing had played with current drivers and shafts, golf balls, and the way fairways are manicured, he'd be hotting it longer than Scott Hend, and in fact would own a long dive record, which actually he did for a while at sea level in the 70s (349 yards). 349 yards with persimmon!!!!!
The only thing Jack didn't have but Tiger does, is a short game. John Feinstein, a carbon copy idioyt like you said on AOL, that Tiger has the best short game in history. There we go agian with the morons... Hve we forgotten Ray Floyd, who chipped in in a major to beat guess who...? Sve Ballesteros? Gary PLayer? Come on guys be real and stop being such suck ups and PCs to the minority crowd who suck up to Tiger Woods... I for one, am not a racist and am glad Michael Campbell, a maori, a colored one, and south pacific native like Vijay, won the U.S. open.
Jack would have never ever missed the puts Tiger missed at 16 and 17. If he didn't have a short game, his putting inside 15 feet was as deadly as there will ever be especially in times of clutch time!
Tiger will never ever ever, ever evr be like Jack.

Mr. Alvarez, the "MD" behind your name must stand for Mentally Deficient. God help us if it identifies you as a medical doctor. Your processing of information is incredibly inept, your spelling is pitiful, but identifying yourself as a racist...PRICELESS!!! I hope all of your "minority" patients, if you allow yourself to treat any, become aware of your comments here and seek more caring treatment.
By the way if you knew anything about golf, you would know that no professional golfer sets his/her sights on setting records for second place finishes, years between winning majors, etc.

Tiger June 21, 2005, 7:41 pm

by Mark
It's a fantastic accomplishment when someone makes a cut on the Tour...more so when it's a major. So why would anyone criticize a player's ability because they finished a mere mortal 2nd place at the US Open? All hats to Michael Campbell; he deserved it. But let's not continue to knock on Tiger because he is now one of the cream of the crop players vs. THE cream of the crop. Many players on Tour would love to have Tiger's "slumping" problem and only win 1 to 3 tournaments per year...or make 142 consecutive cuts. Instead of over-analyzing his swing to death, we need to enjoy his accomplishments as well as many other players. Golf is not a game of perfect so don't expect for anyone to come close again anytime soon to being perfect. Even Tiger said his accomplishments in 1999 & 2000 may never occur again.

Tiger June 21, 2005, 6:27 pm

by Maureen
The whole world, not just the golf world, is a better place because of Tiger Woods. Tiger was putting like a mere mortal, yet he managed to take second in the US Open. He is an athlete capable of making magic. Most of us only watch golf when Tiger is in the hunt. He is the Bobby Jones of our time; the Michael Jordan. He is a legend. I can't wait for him to win another major, and another.

US Open June 21, 2005, 12:56 pm

by John Shaw
I'm not exactly Phil Mickelson's biggest fan, but to say he 'lucked' into the 2004 Masters is just stupid. He worked hard to get rid of the destructive flaws that had prevented him from winning before and he subsequently shot 31 on the most pressure-filled nine holes in the game.
Also, I've followed Michael Campbell's career for years, ever since he denied me $500 by blowing the 1995 Open at St Andrews (I had $10 on him at 50-1) in fact. He is a massive underachiever. His win at the US Open is long overdue and he deserves a lot more credit than what you seem to be giving him.
Tiger played phenomenally well to make a game of it at Pinehurst, but he's not the story this time. Michael Campbell is.

Convoluted Logic June 21, 2005, 9:49 am

by Bob McNeill
Your comment on Tiger is typical of media (which I am in). It's convoluted logic used in an attempt to make Tiger the story every time. Thanks for mentioning Campbell once. That's idiocy. Why do tournaments that Tiger passes on get lousy ratings? Because the media has created a self-fulfilling prophecy. Isn't Michael Campbell a wonderful story (that wasn't told)? Create more heros and we'll have better ratings. This myopic focus on one golfer does the other 124 top players, the fans and viewers an injustice.

RE: Convoluted Logic June 22, 2005, 9:53 am

by Ivory Rubin
You are absolutely correct, Michael Campbell's story is one that is compelling and should be presented with the dignity it deserves. But, if you want to change how Tiger is covered, why not take your concerns to those you indicate are experiencing an injustice (the players, the fans, and the viewers.)?
But, maybe the fans are just gluttons for injustice...they keep showing up in record numbers to tournaments when Tiger is playing. And, his fan galleries are always huge!! Maybe it's the fans that just don't get it. And those viewers, don't they realize how unjust they are being treated when they cause TV ratings to rise by tuning in to tournments when Tiger is in contention? Or, are you the self appointed savior of these misguided millions?
You may want to consider treatment for you myoptic focus of finding ways to denounce the appeal of a young man who is not just the greatest golf since Mr. Nicklaus, but is a solid citzen, a humanitarian, and repays in many ways the game that has given him so much.
I wonder how you viewed the massive coverage of Mr. Nicklaus in his prime?

RIGHT ON BOB:::
TIME FOLKS GOT OVER THE "WOODS CRAP".
GIVE THE OTHER PLAYERS THEIR DUE. THE MEDIA IS A BUNCH OF SICK FOLKS. THE WORLD AND GOLF DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND TIGER WOODS. WHEN GOLF COMES ON TV I WANT TO HEAR WHO THE LEADERS ARE NOT WHERE WOODS IS. HE WAS NOT A FACTOR IN THIS OPEN. IF GOOSEN AND GORE DID NOT RUN INTO A BAD STRING (AND IT WAS REAL BAD) WOODS WOULD HAVE BEEN AN ALSO RAN.
CAMPBELL IS THE GUY THE MEDIA SHOULD BE CHEERING WITHOUT PUTTING THE "WOODS" NAME IN THERE AT ALL.
MR. NO NAME (GORE) MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF BECAUSE HE BEAT WOODS AND MANY OTHERS 3 OUT OF 4 ROUNDS.
CAMPBELL IS THE HERO HERE AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT (MR. T. WOODS).

RE: RE: Convoluted Logic June 21, 2005, 10:48 pm

by h.s baton rouge
FredS., what are you talking about? Did you actually read what you said? Tiger was a NON-factor? Mr. No Name beat woods for 3 out of 4 rounds. You sound like a guy who watched the nba championship and said "Detroit is a better team than San Antonio, because they had the lead at the end of the 3rd period." HELLO! San Antonio won the game! That is why they play FOUR periods. Tiger didn't choke and shoot a 84 in the final round. Man, I shoot 84's. Not some NO Name who has earned $933,061 this year! Give me a break. And Bob, Woulda, shoulda and coulda! If Goosen this or Goosen that. Are you kidding me? Do you guys hate Tiger that much? Who would know anything about golf had it not been for Tiger Woods? I'll answer that, only the people who have for many many years. I believe you know the anwer to that. I will agree with John Shaw. I don't think it was right to call Phil's win a fluke. He deserved it! The same way you deserve to be called a true Champion when you win NINE (9) major championships before the age of 30! Hey Jaime Alvarez-MD, I guess you think the other 124 golfes on the tour are playing with different clubs, balls and fairways that Tiger has to play with? If I recall, Phil said Tiger's equipment was inferior to most others. GO FIGURE?? I guess Jack was playing with different clubs than Arnold, Ray and Gary? Before you guys get on here and disrespect what Tiger has accomplished, THINK!

RE: Convoluted Logic June 21, 2005, 10:25 am

Tiger wasn't "created" by the media, he was recognized by the media for what he is : the greatest golfer of his time. But what adds to the story is that he also represents the very best of golf traditions. He has a class and a deportment that is a role model for thousands of children everywhere and perhaps by watching him they will grow up just a little better than they might otherwise. Children need role models other than just their parents. Rather him than those they see nightly on MTV. The sports world with all its scandels is just a little less tainted because of Tiger Woods.

Tiger Article June 21, 2005, 8:25 am

by WL Oliff
I appreciate and agree with your comments about Tiger's finish in last weekend's US Open. He shouldn't have been there at the finish, but he was .....because he is Tiger.
However, when speaking of "dweebs" why not leave the Phil Michelson bashing out of the mix. To a man (and woman) these golfers perform routinely at a level under pressure that most of us can't relate to physically or mentally (Unless of course you happen to be a sportswriter).
They compete, occasionally they win, and yes, sometimes they crash and burn (they lose). The professionals talk about it, deal with it and then move on recognizing that in spite of tremendous skills, not many are destined to challenge Jack or Tiger status.
How about elevating the writing and avoiding the INCESSANT media urge to take the cheap shots at whomever. Your column and profession would be the benefactor.
WLO/Tenesssee

RE: Tiger Article June 21, 2005, 9:53 am

by CM/Canada
I agree whole-heartedly with WLO/Tennessee. It was a great article with the exception of the Phil bashing. Tiger made the US Open interesting and he made Campbell's victory all that more sweet. I am tired of reading and listening to journalists bash Tiger. It has become the sport of those with nothing else to write about. Why not appreciate what he brings to the sport and if he is not performing up to his lofty standards why not write about someone else who is performing well instead of Tiger-bashing. I agree with your comments about the "dweebs" but you have to be careful that you don't include yourself in that group by taking an unnecessary cheap shot at Phil.
