| Bun in the oven |
June 14, 2006, 3:07 pm |
by Ron Doble
While I thought the "bun in the oven" was a bit strange and missplaced, anyone offended by it is simply LOOKING to be offended. Anyone who has ever eavesdropped on a conversation in the clubhouse between a bunch of "Lady" golfers would know that the bun comment was extremely tame by comparison. Ease up girls.

| Tiger this weekend |

I was with you on this article particularly as Tiger will feel more under the microscope than ever before - hard to imagine what that would feel like.
BUT you raised my hackles (if I have any left) with your wisecrack about "the bun in the oven" - a remark that should have been left in the men's locker room. Maybe you think that female/women/lady golfers don't read your column - take note, this gal has faithfully up until now. Somehow I thought you were better than that.
You took the high road in writing about Tiger's loss - but, brother, you crashed big time at the end.
I think I'll go off to the course and take out my disgust by whacking that lil white ball as far as it can go!

Audrey, you are absolutely correct. The "bun in the oven" comment is inappropriate and should be retracked.

| Who Won't Root for Tiger? |

Cheer for Tiger if that is what you want to do. I feel bad for him, but his loss is not any worse than any other person who loses a father. The media has made this into such a tragedy, but what about all the kids out there who lose a father when they were young? They go the rest of their lives without their Dad. Tiger had 25+ years with his Dad and it is sad, but no one should feel they owe him cheers becuase of some heartbreak. It happens every day - just because it's Tiger doesn't make it any worse.

I hope Tiger Woods wins because the whole weekend will be about him anyway. Too bad if someone else wins because he will be lost in the hype.

Call it whatever you choose, but whenever I encounter news of anyone losing a person near and dear to their hearts, I feel a strong sense of loss and also compassion for for what they maybe going through. I realize that is a condition of the loss of both my father and mother...and, as a former public school educator of 37 years, the fact that I attended more funerals of parents and students than graduations. I always root very hard for their survivors to "return to form" or be stronger in their futures. I feel that's one way of honoring our dead loved ones and friends.
I'm sure there are many who will be rooting for Tiger who probably haven't in the past. Because, most people in this world are fair and abiding souls, who do not possess a level of callousness in their hearts to allow them to have an indifferent attitude.
There was intense rooting for Mr. Nicklaus following the death of his mother and grandson; for Mr. Palmer following the death of his wife; and for Mr. Watson when the loss of Bruce was seemingly a certainty. And I, as one of millions worldwide, will be rooting very hard Thursday thru Sunday for Tiger Woods!!
